Upcoming Outreach OpportunitiesSouper Bowl Sunday: The Super Bowl will draw millions of football fans February 7, but the real story is Souper Bowl Sunday—an event any church can compete in! Souper Bowl Sunday is a souper-simple donation drive for canned soup for Hope Ministries' pantries at our Bethel Mission, Door of Faith and Hope Family Center facilities. Just call Hope Ministries to request one of our colorful Campbell's soup barrels (limited supply), then coordinate with your congregation to collect cans of cream of mushroom and cream of tomato soups on Souper Bowl Sunday! Or, your congregation can donate cash we'll use to purchase food. To sign up for Hope Ministries' Souper Bowl Sunday donation drive or to request a barrel for your church, e-mail info@hopeiowa.org or call (515) 265-7272.Easter Sunday: With Christmas just past, it's hard to believe we're already looking ahead to Easter Sunday! As with Thanksgiving and Christmas, on Easter Sunday (April 4) we will serve and deliver more meals in an effort to bring hope to homeless, near-homeless and hungry families. We will need over 100 volunteers to help with our on-site meal, drivers for in-home meal deliveries and volunteers to sign up to bring food. Volunteer registration will begin February 1. Watch our Web site for more details. 2010 Hearts for Hope Women's Tea: Mark your calendars now and plan to attend our seventh annual Hearts for Hope Women's Tea on Saturday, May 1. Last year more than 700 women attended to show support for homeless and displaced women and children at our Hope Family Center! The luncheon program begins at 11 a.m. at the West Des Moines Sheraton Hotel Grand Ballroom. We're thrilled to announce that "Atlanta's Hostage Hero" Ashley Smith Robinson will be our keynote speaker. Ashley Smith Robinson made news headlines in March 2005 after being held hostage in her own apartment by Brian Nichols following his deadly rampage at Atlanta's Fulton County Courthouse. During her seven hours as Nichols' hostage, Ashley read to him from Rick Warren's “The Purpose-Driven Life” and encouraged him to turn himself in. According to her Web site, Ashley believes that God led her through her dark hours with Nichols, and has called her to use the highly publicized experience to help unlikely angels everywhere find hope. Ashley's book. “Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of Atlanta's Hostage Hero,” debuted at #15 on The New York Times Bestseller List. Watch our Web site for more details about our 2010 Hearts for Hope Women's Tea. Registration will begin later this spring. Attention Youth Groups! We’ll be hosting our first-ever evening event just for youth groups called Wake Up Call, featuring Ashley Smith Robinson. This event is set for Friday, April 30, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Des Moines Christian School in Urbandale. There is no cost to attend, though we will be asking each youth group to collect a specific item (ex: detergent, socks, dish soap, etc.). Youth leaders do need to pre-register their group for this event. Keep an eye on our Web site for more details and online registration to come. Or, feel free to call Mary at (515) 265-7272 for more information. Food-related volunteer opportunities: Hope Ministries has an array of food-related volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, churches and small groups. Options range from fully preparing and serving a meal to helping supplement our food pantries through programs like our Dairy Donors. You can learn more about these opportunities by clicking here. Share a Pair—Save Some Souls: You can help the homeless by sponsoring a used-shoe drive at your church or place of work. As good stewards of your once-favorite footwear, we'll make sure your shoes are put to good use or recycled—thereby helping our ministry to the homeless. More information is available here. Feel free to call (515) 265-7272 or e-mail info@hopeiowa.org to request a receptacle with the Hope Ministries logo and delivery instructions. Thank you for sharing a pair!
