Events & Outreach Opportunities

2nd Annual Walk a Mile in Their Shoes walk-a-thon:

Our walk-a-thon is coming up on Saturday, September 4, at the Copper Creek Lake and Park in Pleasant Hill. You're invited to join us and walk in support of central Iowa's homeless men, women and children. You can participate as an individual or a team. More details—as well as photos and a video of the walk-a-thon—are available here.

New this year! Help us "Loop the Lake." With enough participants, we'll surround Copper Creek Lake to form a "Circle of Hope" with compassionate men, women and children who will stand together in solidarity for people who are homeless in our community. This will require an estimated 1,700 individuals!

Also new this year! You can build your own personal fundraising webpage for this year's walk-a-thon! It's convenient and easy—you won't even have to leave your house to raise funds for the homeless. Stay tuned to our Web site for more details to come.

Current Needs

State fair and other food donation pick-up drivers:

Hope Ministries is looking for volunteers willing to serve as food donation pick-up drivers. We are blessed to have a number of organizations, restaurants, etc., in Des Moines who regularly donate food to our ministry, including vendors at the Iowa State Fair. If you'd be interested in volunteering to drive our vehicle (or yours) and pick up donations on scheduled days, we invite you to contact our volunteer coordinator at (515) 265-7272 or email us at info@hopeiowa.org.

Bible donations:

We are in great need of Bibles for the men in our recovery program! So we're putting out the word to our faithful supporters. If you have new or used Bibles (New International Version and/or large-print preferred) you can donate to our ministry, we would be most appreciative. If you are interested in donating Bibles, please give us a call at (515) 265-7272. Thank you!

Men's Ministry Needs:

  • Men's deodorant
  • Disposable razors

Hope Family Center Needs:

  • Dental floss
  • Chapstick
  • Pull-ups for boys (2-3T, 4-5T)
  • Body wash (for women)

  • Shaving cream (for women)
  • Personal hygiene products
If you, your family, church, civic/service club or place of business are able to help provide any of these items, we invite you to bring your donation in a clearly marked bag or box to our Hope Donation Center at 4950 NE 12th Avenue in Pleasant Hill. Thank you so much!

Ministry Prayer Requests

We invite you to remember our ministry in prayer by becoming a member of our Hope Prayer Team. Members of our prayer team commit to pray regularly for our ministry and those we serve. A list of ongoing prayer requests, as well as specific monthly requests and praises, is located on our Prayer Team page.

Please pray for:

  • Our children at Hope Family Center who are home for the summer—and for the parents and staff who will be spending time with them.
  • Our Board of Directors and Leadership Team as they continue seeking God's vision for our ministry.
  • All the men, women and children who have graduated from our recovery programs and are now in our Hope Aftercare programs.

Praise God for:

  • Men and women in recovery who have reconciled with their children and grandchildren.
  • Our volunteer ambassadors who work diligently within churches as "voices of Hope."
