About the Walk
You are invited to participate and partner with us as we raise awareness about homelessness in central Iowa at our first annual walk-a-thon. All proceeds will benefit Hope Ministries programs and services to homeless men, women and children.

Unlike any other walk-a-thon of its kind, we are offering an interactive experience! Along the walking path you will see cardboard testimonies from once-homeless individuals and families who are current shelter residents or recovery program graduates. (Click the link for an example of cardboard testimonies.) You will have the opportunity to visit a simulated tent camp and visit with someone who used to live along the Des Moines or Raccoon rivers, but decided to make a change. Statistics about homelessness will be posted along the walking path to increase awareness of homelessness. A special prize will be given for every walker who completes the fill-in-the-blank stat sheet.

How to Participate

Walk. We request that you pre-register as an individual or as a team. You can do that online, just click here. Every individual or team is encouraged to set a fundraising goal. Individuals are encouraged to secure pledges from sponsors, i.e. family, friends, neighbors, coworkers. Unlike other walks, pledges for this non-competitive walk are not based on the distance or the time you walk. A pledge is simply an amount a sponsor commits towards the individual walker or team he or she wishes to support.

Whether you are an individual or a team you will need a sponsor form to collect pledges. To obtain this form click here, or you can email us at info@hopeiowa.org or call us at 515-265-7272 to request a form. You can also pick up pledge and sponsor forms for individual walkers and teams at any of the 22 metro QuikTrip locations, Wellspring Parable Christian Store, Connxions Bookstore, or Lutz Pharmacy Healing Book & Bible in Altoona. You can make additional copies of the sponsor pledge form as needed.

Remember to bring your completed sponsor pledge form with you to turn in at registration the day of the walk.

Individuals with pledges totaling $100 or more will receive a free t-shirt. Teams raising $100 or more per team member will also receive free t-shirts for each member of the team.

Individuals and teams who choose not to pre-register or seek sponsor pledges will be encouraged to make a $25 donation per person. For all others, t-shirts will be available for purchase.

Sponsor. If you unable to participate the day of the walk, you can still support the event in two ways:
  1. You can sponsor someone you know who is walking by making a pledge OR
  2. You can "WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES" by donating online. Click here to donate. Thank you!

Volunteer. We will need many helping hands to make this event possible! Check out our volunteer opportunities by clicking here. Check-in for volunteers will be at 8 a.m. on the day of the walk. We will have a volunteer orientation at 8:15 a.m. All volunteers will receive a Walk a Mile in their Shoes t-shirt at check-in at 8:00 a.m.

We are looking for volunteers with a servant’s heart and who can practice the mantra: "How can I be of service?"

Please contact us at info@hopeiowa.org or call us at 515-265-7272 if you are interested in volunteering that day.

Testimony . . . Van's Story

Our first annual walk-a-thon will include a simulated tent camp where participants can get a glimpse of what living conditions are like for one segment of the area’s homeless population. One of our Door of Faith recovery residents, Van, will be stationed at the camp. A former tent camp resident himself, Van will be available to chat with walk-a-thon participants. Here is Van’s story...

Alex Van Cartlandt, Van to those who know him, says he has always been a questioning person. And in the past, that personality trait at times kept him from finding faith and peace.

On the other hand, since coming to Hope Ministries, there are some things Van does know. This is what he knows:

"I know it was stupid."
