Hope Bargain and
Community Outreach Center

The former location of our Thrift Store became too small to accommodate the growing volume of in-kind donations.  The move to 4950 Old E. University Ave. in Pleasant Hill expanded our retail space and a new production area for sorting and processing our donations.   The new location also provides expanded space to accommodate more community and volunteer involvement.

Hope Bargain Center is a Thrift Store, Donation Center, Volunteer Activity Center, Community Outreach Center, Distribution Center and Recycling Center ALL IN ONE.

Hope Bargain Center is a Thrift Store, Donation Center, Volunteer Activity Center, Community Outreach Center, Distribution Center and Recycling Center ALL IN ONE.

A Thrift Store

When you shop at Hope Bargain Center you help the less fortunate in our community.

The retail area of our Bargain Center provides customers with quality low-priced clothing, books, household items, furniture and much more.   Revenue from the Center supports our programs and services.  We convert donated items into meals, shelter and recovery services for the homeless, near homeless and hungry in our community.  Our Bargain Center motto is, “If it’s not here today, check back .”  Our staff and volunteers are in a constant state of sorting through donations and displaying new items every business day.  As the saying goes, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”

A Donation Center

We are tremendously blessed as a culture in so many ways.   Most households have excess clothing, furniture and other items.  We are grateful to our many donors who choose to put their excess items in our hands as in-kind donations.  We steward your donations by converting them into meals, shelter and recovery services for homeless men, women and children.

Donations of clothing can be dropped off at the following locations:

  • Hope Bargain Center: 4950 Old E. University Ave., Pleasant Hill, M-S, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Bethel Mission: 1310 6th Avenue, Des Moines, 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
  • Door of Faith: 6701 SW 9th, Des Moines, 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.

A Donation Pick-up Service

We rely mostly on donors to bring their in-kind donations to one of our three drop-off sites listed above.  Currently our donation pick-up service is limited to once a week on Wednesdays and is limited to furniture and appliances.  Call 262-0876 to schedule a donation pick-up or send an e-mail to: info@hopeiowa.org.

Dave Lewis

“Picking up donations lets me see into the hearts of the people who give,” says Dave Lewis, a V.I.P. volunteer at Hope Ministries. “They are as blessed by giving as the people who receive. You get to see both ends of it!”

Dave and his wife, Melissa, own Performance Display and each week Dave uses the company’s truck — a 22-foot vehicle with a lift gate — to pick up donations for Hope Ministries. “My first day was incredible,” he says. “I stopped at an eastside Curves for Women, where they’d had a food drive, and loaded over 2,000 pounds of food!”

Dave and Melissa chose Hope Ministries because, “They are more than faith-based, they are Christ-based,” Dave says. Drawing from the book Experiencing God, he says, “I try to watch to see where God is at work, then join Him there. Hope Ministries is a place where I can see the Lord working.”

Lana Duff and Amy Wergin, teachers at St. Theresa School, donated over 50 Christmas presents from their 2nd grade class for Hope Ministries to distribute.  Individuals and groups partner with Hope Ministries to serve the less fortunate in our community.

A Distribution Center

All in-kind donations eventually end up at Hope Bargain Center for processing.  There, volunteers sort through clothing and other items.  We first identify how a donation can be used within our ministry, i.e. filing cabinet, dishes, office equipment, furniture in order to stretch our operating budget.  Then we box, label, hang and prepare for floor display in our Bargain Center.

A Recycling Center

Hope Bargain Center recycles inadequate clothing that is bailed and made into insulation.  Recycling provides supplemental revenue for our ministry.  In addition we reach out to other parts of the world where clothing is also needed by bailing and shipping our excess clothing.

Volunteer Activity Center

Hope Bargain Center is also a volunteer activity hub.  The Center is volunteer-driven, so individual and group volunteers are a continuing need.  Youth groups, church small groups, civic and service groups, employee groups are all welcomed.  Individual and group volunteers can schedule for one-time service or a regular weekly or monthly timeslot.  You can sign up for the hours that work best into your schedule.

Some common volunteer timeslots are:

9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
9:00 a.m. – noon
1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

We have several volunteer opportunities at our Hope Bargain and Community Outreach Center.

YEAR-ROUND PURPOSE-DRIVEN VOLUNTER WORK DAYS

Hope Ministries is sponsoring weekly Purpose-driven Work Days every Saturday at the Hope Bargain and Community Outreach Center located at 4950 Old E. University Ave. in Pleasant Hill.  Individuals and groups are invited to participate in three hour shifts from 9:00 a.m. to noon and/or noon to 3:00 p.m. helping with sorting, boxing and displaying clothing and other household donations. Call (515) 265-7272 or e-mail info@hopeiowa.org.

Garage Sale vs. Donating to Bargain Center

If you plan to hold a garage sale, you might want to consider donating your unsold items to Hope Bargain Center.  We accept slightly used items that can be sold in our retail store.

Also, we are thankful to those who chose to sponsor a garage sale with proceeds going to Hope Ministries.

Many more people are foregoing the enormous task of hosting a garage sale and donating their excess items to Hope Bargain Center instead.  We will issue you an in-kind receipt that you can use as a charitable donation deduction on your income tax.

A Community Outreach Center

Many more people in the Des Moines community are becoming aware of our FREE clothes closet at Bethel Mission.  It means a lot to donors to know that their in-kind gifts are being used directly for those who need it the most and who have limited or no resources.              Homeless men at Bethel Mission and the Door of Faith recovery center have access to our clothes closet at not cost.  In fact, any man who knocks on our door who needs clothing regardless of whether they are staying in our shelter or not, can take advantage of our FREE clothes closet located at our Bethel Mission facility at 1310 6th Avenue.

In addition, we provide vouchers to our shelter residents at Hope Family Center as well as referrals from other agencies to our Hope Bargain Center for clothing at no cost.

King’s Closet is a year-round outreach program sponsored by Hope Ministries providing free clothing to individuals and families.  Click here to go to the King’s Closet page.
