How can I move forward, if I can’t shake my past?

“It’s the times when we fall that we have to get back up again so we can achieve our
goals. For me, it was very important to have Hope Ministries to guide me and help me find answers.” —Hector

The power of the Gospel can transcend any language barrier … and the depth of compassion can extend beyond words. We saw evidence of these truths during 40-year-old Hector’s stay at our men’s emergency shelter.

Hector, who speaks limited English, came to our Bethel Mission facility looking for a place to
sleep, food to eat … and someone, anyone, who cared. “I was alone. I asked God for people to help
me,” he said through a translator.

God’s answer was Hope Ministries’ caring staff and volunteers who immediately offered Hector
food, clothing, shelter … and compassion. One of the ways this compassion was displayed was
through a talented young man named Alejandro (pictured left).

Alejandro, 22, is fluent in both English and Spanish and has volunteered in many capacities at
Hope Ministries. In the past, he served as a greeter at our Hope CafÈ, communicating with Spanish-speaking meal guests. “I always wanted to use my bilingual skills to serve God as much as possible,” he says. We introduced him to Hector, and the partnership quickly became a blessing for both men. They read and studied the Bible together. And Hector experienced the compassion he’d been longing for.

“I’m really encouraged by Hector,” Alejandro shares. “He’s very humble and looks up to God.”
Hector told us he’s grateful for everything the staff and volunteers—especially Alejandro—have done for him. “They helped me so much and I know they love me, as well.” At Hope Ministries, many of our residents stay with us long-term, entering our comprehensive recovery programs and working through issues such as addiction, abuse and poverty. Others simply need a bed to sleep in for a few nights, warm meals, clean clothing … and someone to talk to. Because of Alejandro—and because of faithful donors—we were able to be there for Hector when he was struggling.

Our staff and volunteers aren’t alone in helping Hector and others like him. Our financial donors, volunteers and prayer partners are there too. We’re so grateful for your ongoing support.
