Healing for Kelley's Family

Kelley came with her sons, Gavin, 7, and Austin, 8, to Hope Family Center December 9, 2005. “I wanted to change my life,” she says. “I’d been in trouble, and in and out of treatment while my boys stayed with my older daughter. I knew if nothing changed, I’d end up in prison.”

Kelley filled out an application for Hope Family Center’s program then waited anxiously with the boys at a nearby shelter for acceptance. “I knew this program would be best for me and my sons,” she says.

The day the family moved to Hope Family Center was a joyous one! Gavin and Austin were relieved to leave their uncertain circumstances and, says Kelley, “We knew Hope Family Center would be a safe place to stay long-term while we got back on our feet. We felt like it was home.”

Kelley entered the Healing phase of H.E.A.R.T. right away. “It’s the beginning of a journey toward hope for women like Kelley,” says Elizabeth Spragg, Hope Family Center director. “During this time Kelley joined Celebrate Recovery, a 12-step program. She went to church, helped with chores and generally settled in with her family.”

After completing the 30-day Healing component, Kelley moved into Equipping, the program’s second phase. “I started working on my GED and on my health problems. I have ulcers from poor circulation and I see a doctor each week.”

Today, Kelley continues to work through the requirements for Equipping. Her studies include: Alpha (a course in basic Christianity), parenting and other life skills. Recently she regained her driver’s license after completing 95 hours of community service mandated by the courts.

One of Kelley’s greatest hopes was recently fulfilled when her son Austin asked Jesus into his heart. “He is a strong-willed, active kid,” Kelley says, “and he’s come a long way!” Elizabeth adds, “Last week, Austin told me now that he’s a Christian he needs to learn more about the Bible. He began taking one to school and was glued to it as he walked to the bus stop.”

As the school year ended, both Kelley and Elizabeth noted that Austin and Gavin had changed remarkably since being at Hope Family Center. “They used to get in trouble, but they are in sports now and taking piano lessons!” Kelley says with amazement. “People here are so good to me and my kids … so helpful. We’re learning to be better people and live as Christ wants us to.”
