I Am No Longer Called ... An Addict

Out of despair and loathing for what had become of his life, Som drank himself nearly to death. He ended up in the emergency room with alcohol poisoning. When he was stable, doctors pointed him to Hope Ministries’ Bethel Mission, because he had no place else to go.

“I didn’t know what to expect at this place,” Som says. “Then I found out it was a place for helping people turn around—to be a man. They showed me the way to do things.”

Som stayed at our Bethel Mission crisis shelter for 30 days and then chose to begin the Journey of Hope recovery program at our Door of Faith facility. “They treat me like a human being here. They’ve helped me get to know God and to build a relationship with Him.”

In addition to Bible study and Christian counseling, Som is also learning practical life skills including budgeting, anger management and relapse prevention—and he’s working toward his GED. “They have so many things to help us get back on our feet. They build the foundations, and it’s up to us to accept it and continue to build upon it with God’s help.

Som’s family—three children and five grandchildren—support him 100 percent. “They can’t believe the change in me. I am totally a new person. I have faith. I have hope. I have peace of mind.” And when he completes our program, he plans to use what he’s learned here to help other people. “I want to explain how God works and how Hope Ministries worked with me. I want to thank all of the staff, volunteers and donors at Hope Ministries.”

Your compassion and generous support allow Hope Ministries to change lives through Christ’s love, transforming the addict, homeless, self-centered and unaware to self-confident and stable individuals who are ready to fulfill His purpose for their lives. You shall be called . . . a blessing.
