Hope Ministries operates two thrift stores in the Des Moines area, both of which offer low-cost clothing, shoes, furniture, household goods and other slightly used items. We also accept donations at both locations. To keep up to date with ENCORE Thrift Stores' latest news, clearances and sales, and fun finds, check out their facebook page.

So whether you’re shopping at our stores or donating items that could be sold, you’re helping support our emergency shelter and long-term, residential life-recovery services!
The retail area of our ENCORE Thrift Stores provides customers with quality low-priced clothing, electronics, shoes, household items, furniture and fun finds. All items have been donated and are priced according to industry standards.

In-kind donations help make our stores possible...and they help us help those who are homeless and in need!
Our goal is to be good stewards of every donation. For this reason, we ask that donations be clean and in good, usable condition. Here is a list of items we are not able to accept at ENCORE. Donations are accepted during business hours and are sorted, cleaned and priced by our staff and volunteers.
Current Most Needed Donations
Some donations make their way to one of our shelter and recovery facilities to be distributed free to our shelter guests. Other donations are distributed free of charge to those who are in need through area social service agencies and churches who are a part of our King’s Closet program. Finally, others are placed on the shelves in our store. In addition, some items such as cars, rare books, collectibles and antiques will be resold through various partnerships which help us to best steward your donation and maximize its impact within our ministry.
Donations of clothing and other items can be dropped off during business hours.
To request a pickup, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
VEHICLES+ : Are you interested in volunteering larger non-cash assets like property, cars, homes, boats, jewelry, etc. We are able to handle those items as well through our VEHICLES+ program. Donations of non-cash assets are tax-deductible and help us fund our programs and services. Learn more here.
More than 2,000 volunteers cycle through Hope Ministries each year! Our volunteers help with everything from sorting donations to hanging clothes, to doing pick-ups and helping with our recycling efforts. Both individuals and volunteers groups are welcome at our ENCORE Thrift Stores. We invite you to explore these and other opportunities in the volunteer section of our website or call us at (515) 265-7272.
King’s Closet Program & Free Clothing
Through our King’s Closet program, we partner with area agencies and churches to meet the clothing needs of low-income individuals and families in our community. People can receive vouchers for FREE clothing and shoes from our partnering agencies and churches, then bring those vouchers to one of our ENCORE Thrift Store locations and shop for clothing.
We also give away free clothing at our Bethel Mission facility clothes closet. Homeless men at our Bethel Mission and Door of Faith ministry centers have access to our clothes closet at no cost. In fact, any man who knocks on our door who needs clothing—regardless of whether or not they’re staying in our shelter—can take advantage of our free clothes closet at our Bethel Mission facility.
In addition, we provide vouchers to homeless women and children living at our Hope Center, so they can receive free clothing from our ENCORE Thrift Stores.
