Since 1915 Hope Ministries has been faithful and consistent in serving the homeless and hungry here in Central Iowa.
Hope Ministries serves over 10,000 meals and provides over 4,000 night of shelter each month. As a privately funded ministry that receives no government funding, we rely on the generosity of the general public to support our year-round meals, clothing, shelter and recovery programs.
For the past five years we have sponsored a program called SCAN AWAY HUNGER and have been very blessed to have two major organizations in Des Moines partner with us in raising financial support to feed and care for homeless men, women and children here in Central Iowa. Those organizations are Hy-Vee and KCCI TV8.
With their help and that of dozens of other corporate sponsors along with the participation of the general public, our annual Scan Away Hunger program has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for our work.
This year we have a new theme to rally around. Our new theme is FILL A PLATE WITH HOPE. We’ve displayed a graphic below showing the front and back of a (sample) 5 inch paper plate. Printed plates are available to the general public at participating Hy-Vee grocery stores in central Iowa. Participating stores are listed below.
In addition, many churches are sponsoring FILL A PLATE WITH HOPE SUNDAYS in the month of December. These churches will be distributing paper plates to their members who will in turn participate individually through their local Hy-Vee.

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE IN SCAN AWAY HUNGER – FILL A PLATE WITH HOPE
Hope begins with a meal for the homeless and hungry in our community. You can help fill their empty stomachs, give them safe shelter, clean clothes, and offer new and better lives this holiday season and all year long. You can personally feed and care for a homeless and hungry person in Des Moines by participating in our FILL A PLATE WITH HOPE program this Christmas Season.
You can obtain a FILL A PLATE WITH HOPE paper plate at the customer service counter at all participating Hy-Vee stores. See list below. You can also obtain a supply of plates by contacting Hope Ministries by calling 265-7272 or sending an e-mail to info@hopeiowa.org. Many local churches are participating in FILL A PLATE WITH HOPE. Check with your church office for a supply of paper plates.
Simply hand your paper plate to your checker at your local participating Hy-Vee store and say, “I’d like to fill this plate with hope.” Your checker will enter the code on your plate and add $2.05 to your bill to feed and care for a homeless or hungry person at Hope Ministries.
You can scan more than one meal. Just tell your checker how many plates (meals) you’d like to fill.
$2.05 = One meal
$4.10 = Two meals
$10.25 = Five meals
$20.50 = Ten Meals
$41.00 = Twenty meals
All funds received through Scan Away Hunger will be used to help feed and care for homeless and hungry men, women and children in central Iowa throughout the year.
