General Information

Hope Ministries serves over 12,000 meals a month providing meals every day year-round at our Hope Café, Bethel Mission, Door of Faith, and Hope Family Center facilities. Volunteers are needed to help us feed and care for homeless and near homeless men, women and children.

Meals for Hope is an outreach opportunity for volunteers to help us tend to the needs of the those who are homeless and hungry every month preferably or periodically as you are able in the mission field in your back yard.

We serve three meals every day, 365 days a year, to our shelter guests at our Bethel Mission, Door of Faith, and Hope Family Center facilities as well as hundreds of near homeless men, women and children from the community at our Hope Café who come to us for free meals each day of the week all year long.

Whether you are an individual or group if you have a heart for feeding the hungry, Hope Ministries has a variety of food-related volunteer opportunities at various levels of commitment to help us feed and care for the homeless and hungry. Please call or e-mail us at (515) 265-7272 or info@hopeiowa.org to schedule a date and coordinate specific details with our staff or complete our group volunteer application or individual volunteer application and indicate your area of interest.

Meals for Hope Options

Adopt-a-Meal

Individual or group volunteers who sign up for this opportunity agree to prepare a meal off-site, deliver, serve and clean up a full noon or evening meal (for 120+ people) at Hope Café on a monthly basis. This would be the most ideal for our ministry for volunteers to make this sort of commitment. We provide instructions and details on what food items are needed and/or recipes. Available times, Monday through -Saturday, 11 a.m.to to 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Minimum serving age is 12. Serving Group Size: 8-10

Pie in the Sky

This option is very similar to our “Supplement and Serve!” Can’t adopt an entire meal? Desserts are always a hit at our Hope Café!

Pie in the Sky involves bringing desserts for 120+ (cakes, pies, cookies, bars) to top off the meal, help serve the meal and help clean up. Available times, Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Minimum serving age is 12. Serving Group Size: 8-10.

Supplement and Serve

Perhaps preparing and serving an entire meal is not feasible for you or your group. If so, you might consider signing up to help us feed the homeless and hungry through our Supplement and Serve option.

This option involves bringing a side dish (baked beans, mashed potatoes, casserole, beverage or desert, etc.) to supplement our meal, help serve the meal and help clean up. We provide instructions and details on what food items are needed and/or recipes. Available times, Monday through -Saturday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Minimum serving age is 12. Serving Group Size: 8-10

Bake and Take

Another food-related volunteer option for individual or group volunteers is to commit monthly to help us feed and care for homeless and hungry men, women and children by preparing a meal for 120 off-site and delivering the prepared food to the assigned facility. No serving or clean up is required. We provide instructions and details on what food items are needed and/or recipes.

We hope you or your group would consider helping us tend to the needs of the those who are homeless in our community by committing to one of our monthly Meals for Hope options.

Dairy Donor

Like your refrigerator at home, dairy products are a staple here at Hope Ministries as we seek to provide well-rounded, healthy meals for our residents and meal guests. By participating in this "shop and drop" volunteer opportunity for our Hope Café, Bethel Mission, Hope Family Center, and/or Door of Faith, facilities, you help us supplement our kitchens with milk, cheese and other ongoing dairy needs.

We welcome you to become a Dairy Donor one-time or on a regular basis. For more information on this Meals for Hope option, we invite you to contact us at (515) 265-7272 or info@hopeiowa.org, or complete our group application or individual volunteer application online and indicate your interest in this option.

At our Hope Family Center, we are looking for regularly committed Dairy Donors who bring designated dairy products once a month on Mondays and Thursdays. For more details about our Dairy Donor program at Hope Family Center, including dairy item lists and a calendar, please click here.

Sandwich Club

Our Sandwich Club offers you or your group a service and outreach opportunity to supplement our Meals for Hope program to the those who homeless and near homeless in our community. This activity can be carried out by members of your church including a small group, Sunday School class, men’s or women’s group and/or youth group.

The commitment includes making 200 sandwiches and cookies/bars individually packaged in a Zip Lock bag and placed in a brown paper bag along with an apple, bag of chips, napkin and an encouraging note. We then provide these bagged lunches for working men staying in our emergency shelter. They are also sometimes used to supplement meals for our residents and the community.

Your project can be coordinated off-site and delivered or assembled on-site by your group at our Hope Café. Hope Ministries’ staff can meet/greet your group and give a tour of our emergency shelter and/or incorporate a Make a Bed experience depending on the desires of your group.

We invite you to join our Sandwich Club and provide sandwiches one-time or on a monthly or quarterly basis. Please call in advance to schedule a date and coordinate specific details with our staff. For more information on this Meals for Hope option, we invite you to contact us at (515) 265-7272 or info@hopeiowa.org, or fill out our group application or our individual volunteer application online and indicate your interest in this option.
