Planned Giving
The Legacy of Hope Society is made up of donors who have remembered Hope Ministries (Bethel Mission, Door of Faith, Hope Family Center) in their will and/or estate plan.
Members of the Society have made estate provisions to perpetuate their support beyond their lifetime with a charitable legacy gift.
Their generosity will be felt for generations to come providing food, clothing, shelter and recovery services to homeless and hungry men, women and children in Des Moines and central Iowa.
Have you included Hope Ministries in your will, beneficiary and/or estate plan?
More donors are choosing to use estate gifts to perpetuate their current support beyond their lifetimes – support that will provide food, clothing and shelter and Christ-centered care for the homeless, hungry and hurting of Des Moines and central Iowa.
If you HAVE remembered Hope Ministries in your will or estate plan, please let us know…and thank you! To request a LEGACY OF HOPE membership application, click HERE to go to our CONTACT US page and check the appropriate box. David Burrier will send you the appropriate information.
If you HAVEN’T included Hope Ministries in your will and would like more information, contact David L. Burrier, chief development officer at 265-7272 or send and e-mail to dburrier@hopeiowa.org, or refer to additional information on this website page.
Here’s an example of a simple charitable bequest you can give your attorney to use in your will:
“I [your name], of [city, state, zip], give, devise and bequeath to Hope Ministries, Des Moines, Iowa, [percentage of your estate or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose.”

Hope Ministries’ First Charter Member of Legacy of Hope Society is Brandt Van Maanen. Brandt has been involved with several worthy causes, but his many years as a volunteer at Bethel Mission have touched him like no other. Brandt becomes the first charter member of the Legacy of Hope Society, fulfilling his desire to perpetuate his support for Hope Ministries and the homeless we serve.
”This is truly a Christian environment and discipleship is intentional every step of the way,” says Brandt. ”God’s word is proclaimed and lived out at Bethel Mission and Door of Faith and I’ve seen countless lives changed over my 50-year association. That’s why I’ve made arrangements in my will to continue my financial support for Hope Ministries long after the Lord calls me home.”

Ray and Angelyn Klyn have been involved at Hope Ministries for many years. Now, as Legacy of Hope members, the couple has joined the ranks of faithful donors who have remembered Hope Ministries in their wills.
“Hope Ministries has been very dear to my heart. I have been serving on the board of directors off and on for 40 years, and I’ve learned to love the cause of one of God’s kingdom works,” Ray says. “It’s a very necessary ministry that combines showing the love of Christ with proclaiming the Gospel.”

INVESTING IN GOD’S KINGDOM ON EARTH
YOUR LEGACY OF HOPE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
For over 125 years (through Bethel Mission and the Door of Faith) Hope Ministries has been a faithful and consistent force in bringing lasting hope to the homeless, the hurting and the destitute in Des Moines and central Iowa by providing comprehensive programs and services to help the homeless find peace and healing.
We have served as a conduit for many compassionate and generous people in metropolitan Des Moines and beyond. As a partner in ministry during their lifetime, they have helped ensure that our services and recovery programs meet the needs of countless desperate men, women and children.
Over those many years there have been countless men and women whose involvement in our ministry have left a legacy of hope for future generations.
Now they and YOU can extend your support beyond your lifetime through any number of planned giving opportunities.
Thank you for exploring ways to continue your compassionate support of programs and services for the homeless through a legacy (planned) gift to Hope Ministries.
Why do we call it a legacy? Because your choice to benefit Hope Ministries with a portion of your estate assets says a lot about your values and your commitment to those values. Arranging a charitable gift beyond your lifetime sends a strong message to your loved ones and peers. You send more than money to the next generation – you send an important stewardship message – a legacy.
You are also leaving a legacy to future generations of homeless men, women and children served through Hope Ministries. For instance, your gift – if given to our endowment – ensures that each year after your death you can continue to provide in perpetuity the same support you gave annually during your lifetime!
As you further explore this section of our website, you’ll see there are many ways you can support Hope Ministries with a legacy gift! Thank you for taking time to prayerfully consider a planned gift to our ministry. Those who will find themselves homeless and hopeless in the future will benefit from your generosity in the future but will never be able to thank you.
We extend our heartfelt thanks and are deeply grateful for your consideration!

Life Estate in Home
Like cash, gifts of property can be simple to make. However, due to some special tax considerations, check with our Chief Development Officer before giving any property valued at $500 or more. Making a gift of your house or farm to Hope Ministries can have definite estate tax advantages, and often the donor can continue to live in the family home the rest of his or her life.

At the time period’s end, the trust terminates and the assets are given back to the person(s) the donor names. The income tax deduction is for payments made annually to Hope Ministries.

ENDOWING YOUR GIFT
Throughout your adult life, you may have chosen to make specific gifts each year to Hope Ministries or other favorite charitable organizations. After your death, your dependable support is missed. That’s why we encourage you to consider endowing your gift.
Here’s how it works:
Let’s say your average annual gift to Hope Ministries is $250. If you gave a $5,000 life insurance policy, a trust or included a bequest in your will for that same amount to Hope Ministries’ endowment, upon your death our ministry would receive the $5,000 and invest it.
Assuming it could earn 5% per year, your gift would “endow” (perpetuate) an annual stream of income of $250 – just enough to replace the annual support you had been providing during your lifetime. The chart to the right shows other example amounts.
Thank you for taking time to prayerfully consider an endowed gift to perpetuate your support beyond your lifetime.
