Holiday Volunteer Opportunities

We love volunteers! Each year, more than 2,000 people volunteer with Hope Ministries . . . serving meals, working in our ENCORE Thrift Stores, leading chapel, and more. We offer a high-impact volunteer program for individuals who want to serve on a regular basis, as well as one-time and group opportunities.

Our Easter 2018 volunteer roles are now filled! Check back later this fall for announcements regarding our Thanksgiving and Christmas volunteer opportunities.

Here’s What’s Happening on the Holidays

On Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, we will serve special meals to the homeless men, women and children staying at our emergency shelter and recovery facilities. We will also deliver thousands of meals to low-income, homebound and disadvantaged individuals and families throughout the Greater Des Moines Area. This will take hundreds of on-site volunteers!

In addition to on-site volunteers on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, we have a number of holiday outreach opportunities perfect for families, small groups, congregations, businesses and others looking to reach out to those in need.

On-Site Holiday Volunteers

Each holiday, we have three on-site volunteer opportunities including:

  • Food Donation Day Volunteers—helping us receive thousands of food donations on on the day before each holiday. Time commitment is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Holiday On-Site Volunteers—helping us package and serve meals on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Must be 13 or older. Time commitment is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Meal Delivery Driver Teams—helping us deliver meals around the Des Moines area. We’ll provide addresses ahead of time, and will ask that you use your own GPS to determine our route. You’ll need a car large enough to fit 25-40 grocery sacks. This is a great option for families with younger kids! Time commitment is 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sign up for Easter is now open! Register for any of the above opportunities, please fill out this online form or call 515-265-7272.

Mission: Christmas

Each year at Christmas-time, we provide more than 200 gift bags for men, women and children in our emergency shelter and life recovery centers . . . and we couldn’t do it without you!

When you “adopt” a man, woman or child, we’ll provide a specific gift list and you’ll fill a Christmas bag with hygiene items, devotional books, toys and other items from the list. The cost estimate per bag is $35-$50

To sign up to provide one or more gift bags, give us a call at 515-265-7272 or email
