Holiday Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered during our Thanksgiving meal outreach! You helped us deliver around 2,800 meals throughout Des Moines plus offer to-go meals onsite…and we’re so grateful! For those interested in volunteering on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, we still have some open positions. Due to COVID-19, we will be taking health/safety precautions including masks, social distancing and temperature checks.

Online registration for Christmas volunteering is open now. Register here.

Christmas Volunteer Needs

Our Christmas volunteer needs include:

  • Thursday, December 24 – Christmas Food Donation Day: On Christmas Eve, we will receive thousands of food donations from community members! Unlike past years, due to the pandemic, this will be a drive-through event. The time commitment is 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Friday, December 25 – Christmas Onsite Volunteers: Help us assemble around 3,000 meals to be delivered into the community! Onsite volunteers must be 13 or older. The time commitment is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Friday, December 25 – Christmas Meal Delivery Driver Teams: This is a great opportunity for families with younger children! Help deliver meals around Des Moines. We will provide addresses several days in advance so you can use your phone/GPS to map a route. The time commitment is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Holiday Food Donation Days

One wonderful way to help us out this Christmas is by donating food for our holiday meals! You can help us out by donating food. We’re holding a contactless, drop-off food donation even on Christmas Even from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at our Bethel Mission (1310 6th Avenue in Des Moines.)

Needed food donations include:

  • Ready-to-serve dinner rolls
  • Cookies (pack two per baggie)
  • Ground beef, pork loin, bacon, ham
  • Milk, cheese, eggs, butter
  • #10 cans of green beans or mixed veggies
  • Condiments and salad dressing

Christmas Outreach Opportunities

We’re so grateful to everyone who has already signed up to participate in Mission: Christmas and provide special gifts for the men, women and children in our care this holiday season. Although all our Mission: Christmas gift bags have been committed to, there are still several other ways you can help us give hope to struggling individuals and families this Christmas. From simple essentials like laundry detergent and bus tokens to specific wish lists for individuals at Hope Center for Women and Children, we’ve compiled a variety of outreach opportunities.

Learn more about our additional holiday outreach opportunities here. Thank you!

Reverse Advent Calendar

Here’s a special way to celebrate the advent season! Check out our Reverse Advent Calendar. Set aside a food item each day during December leading up to Christmas and then on Christmas Eve, drop off your collection at Hope Ministries. We’re holding a contactless donation drop-off event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on December 24 at our Bethel Mission (1310 6th Avenue).

This is a wonderful opportunity for families with young children—or for anyone who looking for a way to bless others during this Christmas season.

Please note that some items on our list are perishable and will need to be in a freezer/fridge leading up to Christmas Eve.
